Kellogg’s, the makers of Pringles, announced on Tuesday, June 26, that the latest flavor to join its canon of popular chips will be Nashville Hot Chicken. As you may have guessed thanks to its moniker, the Nashville Hot Chicken flavor is inspired by the spicy dish of the same name that’s well-known throughout the south.

Nashville Hot Chicken was reportedly first created back in the 1930s when an angry girlfriend added extra seasonings to chicken batter in order to inflict pain on her significant other. However, her partner ended up loving the hot and spicy creation – which is made with jalapeño, cayenne pepper and paprika – and thus, Nashville Hot Chicken was born.

Today, the flavorful dish is one of the best-known culinary traditions, and it’s gaining popularity across the country. “Americans are going crazy for Nashville Hot Chicken,” said Kurt Simon, senior director of brand marketing for Kellogg’s U.S. Snacks division, via a press release. “If you love spicy snacks, this new flavor of Pringles is made just for you, and you don’t have to go all the way to Nashville to try it. Pringles Nashville Hot Chicken Flavor tastes insanely close to the real thing.”

Becky Wolfe, who is a product development scientist at Kellogg’s, added, “When we were creating Pringles Nashville Hot Chicken Flavor we instantly knew this would be a success. Pringles ‘hot’ flavors are some of the most fun to develop. Our team sampled the different spice combinations so we could get this flavor to taste just like the real deal.”
