James Gunn

James Gunn is a screenwriter, director and producer known for his work for fan-favorite superhero films. The DC Studios CEO grew a passion for filmmaking as a young child while making 8mm zombie films featuring his brothers. He later attended Columbia University, where he also landed a part-time position at Troma Entertainment. There, he was paid $150 to write the screenplay for Tromeo & Juliet (1996).

Throughout his career, Gunn has directed several successful films, including Slither (2006), Super (2010), Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (2014, 2017, 2023) and Suicide Squad (2021). In 2022, he cocreated the Max series Peacemaker, a spinoff of Suicide Squad starring John Cena’s character. He directed 2025’s Superman, which serves as a relaunch of the iconic DC character.

For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn received a nomination from the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film.

Gunn was previously married to actress Jenna Fischer from 2000 to 2008. In September 2022, he married actress Jennifer Holland, whom he’d been dating since 2015.
