Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen is an American singer-songwriter and musician known for anthems including “Born to Run” and “Born in the U.S.A.” Springsteen was raised in a working-class family in Freehold, New Jersey. He developed an interest in music as a child after seeing Elvis Presley on television and began playing guitar as a teenager. After graduating from Freehold High School in 1967, he briefly attended Ocean County College but dropped out shortly after enrolling.

Springsteen began performing with local New Jersey bands including the Castiles and Steel Mill before signing with Columbia Records in 1972 after auditioning for producer John Hammond. He released his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., in 1973. His breakthrough came with Born to Run in 1975, establishing him as a major rock star. He later earned the nickname “The Boss” and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

His notable albums include Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978), The River (1980), Nebraska (1982), Born in the U.S.A. (1984), Tunnel of Love (1987) and The Rising (2002). Springsteen has won 20 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for “Streets of Philadelphia” and, in 2018, he was honored with a Tony Award for Springsteen on Broadway. He has also received two Golden Globe Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor. In 2025, he was depicted by Jermey Allen White in the biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere.

Springsteen married actress Julianne Phillips in 1985. They divorced in 1989. He married singer-songwriter Patti Scialfa in 1991. They have three children: Evan James Springsteen (born in 1990), Jessica Rae Springsteen (born in 1991) and Samuel Ryan Springsteen (born in 1994). Jessica is an equestrian who represented the United States at the 2020 Olympics.
