Gossip Girl Sets New Ratings Record

While the CW hit slipped in overall viewers, more young adults and women tuned in for the second season

Gossip Girl is picking up steam.

Monday's season two premiere was up 6 percent from its premiere last year in the adult 18-49 demographic -- and up 10 percent among the network’s key women and teen 18-34 demo.

Its overall viewers slipped a bit, though.

Around 3.37 million viewers tuned in last night, while the first season premiere attracted 3.5 million people.

Still, it managed to beat reruns of CBS' Monday comedies Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother in the 18-49 demo.

The teen drama, which premieres on the CW Sept. 1, starts off in New York's swanky beach getaway locale, The Hamptons.

"I got really scared," the Gossip Girl star says after the notorious rap mogul handed him his keys

Years before landing his Gossip Girl gig, Chace Crawford worked as a valet in New York City.

"I was the rookie," the 23-year-old actor said Thursday on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show. "I was running everywhere!"

Did he ever go through his customers' glove compartments?

"I'm not gonna lie — I've stolen some gum!" said Crawford, who took on the job shortly after dropping out of California's Pepperdine University after only a year.

But Crawford didn't pull any fast moves when one famous face handed him his keys.

"Suge Knight came in once, and I got really scared," Crawford recalled. "I think I made someone else [move] it. I didn't want to be laid out."

Crawford is currently shooting the second season of Gossip Girl (debuting September 1).

He recently said he can sometimes get uncomfortable with the show's racy storylines.

"I come from a moral background, and I can see the power of the show, and imagine my old school teachers cringing, or my grandparents thinking, 'Oh, my God,' when they see me, say, having sex on a barstool," he told London's The Independent. "But you have to remember, this is not a reality show. It's supposed to be pure entertainment."

Achieving fame so fast "can be a double-edged sword," Crawford admitted. "But right now, I couldn't ask for more, and I certainly never complain about it."

Chace Crawford Admits Gossip Girl Is "a Weight on My Conscience"

Chace Crawford says he can sometimes get uncomfortable with the racy undertone of his CW hit Gossip Girl.

"Is that a weight on my conscience?" Crawford says in a new interview with London's The Independent. "Well, yes, I think it is. I come from a moral background, and I can see the power of the show, and imagine my old school teachers cringing, or my grandparents thinking, 'Oh, my God,' when they see me, say, having sex on a barstool. But you have to remember, this is not a reality show. It's supposed to be pure entertainment."

He says the show isn't "making an instruction manual telling [teens] how to drink and do drugs, or have sex. We're just laying out how it is.

"My character is very conflicted, and even in the episodes where he's having sex then dumping girls, there's often regret," Crawford says of his role as preppy stud Nate Archibald. "You know, there are repercussions to certain sorts of behavior that come full circle."

Sometimes he says he'll put a limit on how much skin he'll show. Recently, he convinced producers to let him keep his shirt on.

"I never actually said I disliked having my top off; it was just that on that occasion it didn't make sense," he explains. "Nate was supposed to be waking up, hungover, on his buddy's couch. So why would he be in his boxer shorts?

"I don't actually mind taking my clothes off most of the time – it's why I go to the gym," he says. "As an actor, you pick and choose your battles."

Achieving fame so fast "can be a double-edged sword," Crawford admits. "But right now, I couldn't ask for more, and I certainly never complain about it."

He says he laughed off rumors that he and co-star Ed Westwick are having a fling. (Crawford was also romantically linked to JC Chasez, though both vehemently deny gay rumors.)

"It's kind of funny," Crawford tells the paper. "I guess some people assume there's a seed of truth to it. People think where there's smoke, there's fire."

He says he wasn't sure who started the rumors — and doesn't care.

"I just don't even want to speculate on that. It's just one of those things that rolls off my back," Crawford says. "There's not one seed of truth to it, so it'll just go away in the end."

The Jonas Brothers and the CW hit Gossip Girl were the big winners at Sunday's Teen Choice Awards.

Both took home six awards each.

Gossip Girl was honored for choice TV drama, breakout show, breakout male actor (Chace Crawford), breakout female and TV drama actress (Blake Lively) and TV villain (Ed Westwick).

The Jonas Brothers won for choice breakout group, love song, music single, song of the summer, male red carpet fashion icons and male hotties.

"Last year we were here presenting, and to be back a year later and to be up for seven awards, that’s really, really crazy!" Nick Jonas told Usmagazine.com. "We are so blessed, and our fans are incredible, and we love it."

Miley Cyrus — who scored three awards — hosted the show, which airs tonight at 8 p.m. (ET) on Fox.

Lauren Conrad won choice TV female reality star.

"It’s really cool," she told Us. "It came from people who watch you every week and relate to you."

She told Us she'll keep her award "with my mom in Laguna. She has a room for them."

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere was honored as choice TV action-adventure actress and David Beckham as choice male athlete.

His son Cruz stole the show, however, when he started break dancing on stage after his dad accepted his award.

David said he didn't teach his son those moves.

"He went on tour for six months with his mom," he told Us, "so maybe he learned from her!"

Parents Television Council says racy shot of Chace Crawford in bed with an older woman "reeks of desperation"

Four new promo ads for the second season of Gossip Girl have caused quite stir.

The Parents Television Council has slammed the shots, which show a topless Leighton Meester making out and Chace Crawford in bed with an older woman.

"I think it reeks of desperation, if they have to position themselves as so edgy and so controversial that they've been called out by us," Melissa Henson, PTC director of communications, told the Associated Press.

CW marketing boss Rick Haskins defends the campaign, saying it caters to their 18-34 female demographic.

"What we're trying to do is communicate with the audience in a way that they like and can appreciate," he said. "This sort of campaign resonates with someone who likes Gossip Girl."

It isn't the first time promos for the show have gotten people talking.

A campaign last spring featured cast members under the headline "OMFG." (CW's Haskins said at the time that the initials could stand several things including "Oh My Freaking Goodness.")

Around that time, the PTC rep said the show was "undermining" positive values that parents are trying to instill in their children.

The second season of Gossip Girl starts September 1.

The Gossip Girl star tells Us he wants a Mercedes — and "world peace"

Chace Crawford rang in his 23rd birthday over the weekend in the Hamptons.

"I was at my buddy's house," the Texas native told Usmagazine.com at the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge on Saturday. "I had all my friends up from Texas and California. I flew them all in and then had a big barbecue!"

His perfect gift?

"I'm asking for this Mercedes over here, but they [event organizers] won't give it to me," he joked. "I couldn't talk them into it; they were having none of it.

"That's what I want ... other than world peace."

Crawford was joined by co-stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley (but not bromance buddy Ed Westwick) at the Casa El San Juan Hotel later that night as the celebrations continued.

"When it came time for Chace to blow out his cake, his friend joked, 'Do something funny,' so he stuck his fist in the cake and ate a large chunk of it," a partygoer told Us.

Lovebirds Badgley and Lively – who noshed on hot dogs – "held hands while walking, and even held hands while eating!" the witness added.

Gossip Girl Blake Lively is dating co-star Penn Badgley.

How does an actress fall for her co-star?

“Maybe when they kiss off the set — because it’s definitely not romantic on the set, that’s for sure," Lively, 20, tells August's Seventeen. "When you’re saying these words that people are making you say to one another, nothing about it is real or genuine. So if two people connect outside their characters, then that’s how they get together.”

And it certainly wasn't tough connecting with Badgley, 21.

"Penn does these silly dance moves, and he's very witty and quick, so it's fun to have sharp banter with him," Lively says.

Co-stars Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen and Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford (who recently denied gay rumors) make her day job a little easier as well.

“Everyone is really funny and has such strange things that they do," Lively says. "Like Leighton does amazing voice impressions, and she can impersonate anyone’s face.

"Chace does an amazing impression of Scott Stapp from Creed.

"Ed is always singing," Lively adds. "Taylor is just so adorable, I just want to bake her a cupcake."

Lively also revealed her secret passion: Guitar Hero!

“I play in tournaments in Brooklyn," she says. "I’ll cover myself in sailor tattoos and dress like a rock star. Everyone else dresses totally normally and must think I’m a complete freak!”

Lastly, she says she tired of constant comparisons to Paris Hilton.

"I once heard someone say that I'm similar to Paris Hilton – since I have a dog and blonde hair, that must mean we're alike," she tells the magazine, according to an excerpt in the New York Post.

"It's a dumb thing to say," she adds. "I don't think that makes Paris and me similar ... I don't go to clubs, I don't party, I don't dance on tables, and I don't like sex tapes."

Gossip Girl Spin-Off in the Works?

OMG: A Gossip Girl spin-off could be in the works.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new show will be set at a girls boarding school.

Actress Taylor Momsen (who plays the divalicious Jenny Humphrey) is being eyed to headline. A new character also could be introduced this fall and be spun off.

But, executive producer Josh Schwartz tells E!: "Not sure how this got out there — but no plans for spin off at this moment. The books do have a spin off, but we have nothing in the works right now other than making sure Season 2 gets off to a great start."

On the original CW hit, Humphrey strived to be popular — and clashed with queen bee Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) in the process. Last season, she almost got arrested after stealing a couture gown from one of her friends' moms. She was also nearly date raped.

In the book — on which the series is loosely based — Jenny is sent away to boarding school after being forced to repeat ninth grade.

It is unclear if the CW would pick up the show (the network recently announced plans to air a 90210 spin-off).

As a result, the spin-off could end up on a competing network.

A CW spokesperson declined to comment.
