Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live (SNL) premiered on NBC in October 1975 and was created by Lorne Michaels. The late-night comedy sketch show is broadcasted live from New York and has introduced iconic catchphrases and characters to pop culture — from Billy Crystal’s “You look mahvelous” to Rachel Dratch’s “Debbie Downer.”

Every episode has a celebrity host and a musical guest, with Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Sir Elton John among those who have graced the NYC studio’s stage through the years. The show usually consists of comedy sketches, the satirical “Weekend Update” segment covering current events, commercial spoofs, digital shorts and more.

SNL has helped launch the careers of many cast members, including Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, Pete Davidson, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig. Certain sketches have even been turned into feature films, such as 1980’s The Blues Brothers and 1992’s Wayne’s World.

Since its inception, SNL has won 93 Primetime Emmy Awards, six Writers Guild of America Awards and three Peabody Awards. In 2000, the show was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Seven years later, it was listed as one of Time’s “100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME.”
