The Namesake
By THELMA ADAMSOPENS: FRIDAY 3/9

Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) fills the title role in a moving, messy melodrama about Gangol Ganguli, a U.S.-born Indian torn between his parents' traditions and assimilating into suburbia. The dramatic role challenges Penn's range, but veteran Indian actors Irfan Khan and Tabu root the drama as Calcutta natives Mr. and Mrs. Ganguli, whose arranged marriage blossoms in America. More lightweight: a bland Jacinda Barrett as Gogol's privileged Anglo girlfriend. Based on Jhumpa Lahiri's bestseller, the film sometimes feels like it's leaping from chapter to chapter with a few pages missing, but Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) has delivered another rich movie with strong characters.
