On October 9, Patrick Dempsey’s tardiness to the Grey’s Anatomy set proved too much for costar Isaiah Washington and the actor unleashed an anger towards Dempsey that, multiple sources tell Us, has been building since the show debuted in March 2005.
Says the insider, "Isaiah grabbed Patrick's neck and was like, 'I'm so tired of you.' He choked him!...Isaiah and Patrick had to be separated."
What’s behind Washington’s tantrum?
“There was lingering resentment between Patrick and Isaiah before this happened,” says a set source. “It seems like Isaiah is pissed that he doesn’t get the same attention Patrick does.”
No wonder: Dempsey and Washington were both up for the dream job of playing McDreamy. If things had worked out differently, it could have been Washington’s face on so many magazine covers now that the show is a hit.
Another source of on-set tension? “Everyone on-set is intimidated by Isaiah,” says one source familiar with the day-to-day of shooting. “He’s not approachable and doesn’t chat with the cast or crew unless they’re addressing him.” “Isaiah is all about ego,” says another cast confidant. “His attitude is, ‘I’m a star. I should get all the attention.’ Few on that set like him.”
However, Washington’s on-set scuffles began long before he suited up in scrubs. During a 1997 guest stint on the TV show High Incident, the actor got into a physical fight with costumer Bryan Birge, who filed a restraining order against the actor.
While filming the 2000 movie Dancing in September, a woman on-set says the actor made a sexist remark that made her cry. “I did nothing to deserve that,” she tells Us.
Washington allegedly acted aggressively with a female costar during a scene for Soul Food in 2000, according to TMZ.com. Though he had no comment on the incident, Soul Food exec producer/writer Kevin Arkadie tells Us, “He’s mercurial…We had to have a conference now and then.”
At a September 2005 TV Guide Emmy party in L.A., former Denver Broncos star Terrell Davis got into a fight with a bodyguard who had previously asked him to leave. Washington tried to defend his friend Davis, who later filed a lawsuit, accusing the bodyguard of racism. (A rep for Washington didn’t return calls.)

washington doesn't deserve to stay on the show, he's not a professional, his part could easily be terminated by letting him die, or another accident or be sued because he performed a tragic surgery because of his hand, you do not even have to replace him in this case, just hire another mcdoctor.....
Based on the reports, people who know Isaiah personally say, "he has major anger management issues". He is clearly not a racist, because he went after an African American director on the set of "Soul Food" and production had to be closed down for half a day. Seems Mr. Washington has little or no patience After this episode, something tells me he is going to start behaving himself.
Honestly, Isaiah has no reason to act like such a jerk. Just because he didn't get the roll of Derek. At least he is in the show at all! I mean, after his recent "attempt" at killing patrick dempsey, and his remark to T.R. about his sexuality. He deserves to be off the show. Y'ahear me Isaiah? Goodbye hollywood hello prison cell.

Firstly, Isaiah is not ugly. I find him quite attractive and I am sure I am not alone. Secondly, there are so many rumors around this matter that who knows what to believe. I am amazed at how quickly folk jump to conclusions without much in the way of facts. Thirdly, the Internet has become quite the place to expose all kinds of prejudice. Sadly, reading these postings reminds me of how ignorant our society really is...Finally, I am reserving opinion about the matter and trusting the judgement of those whose responsibility it is to investigate and resolve the matter. My experience in personnel management has shown me that nothing is as black and white (pun intended) as it seems. I hope all of those so eager to voice their opinion on this matter are giving as much thought to their voting.
I haven't seen any bad behavior resembling any of this mentioned at my job, because we would be reprimanded, put on a counseling plan, or fired if we acted that way.
This man should have been arrested and fired. He is a violent man.
i'm sorry. It needs to be said. If he were a white man, he would long ago have been bounced out of roles and arrested.
And rightfully so.
But as demonstrated by his friend who got physically aggressive and called on it, Ii suspect that if he were to be fired, he would scream rascism.
Don't boycott the show, because that would be kind of dumb, since the show isn't mainly about Isaiah. What he said was wrong, and I think his character should just have his hand shake uncontrollably, then he won't be able to do surgery anymore, and then he commits suicide. Voi la, he's out of the picture. But the show is amazing. It's a time to tune out the real world (including the REAL actors that play them) and focus on this fantasy world for a little while.

Isiah is a big part of the show and yeah, Paris Hitlon utters the N-word and jackasses like Perez Hilton who jumps on Isiah doens't even mention THAT.
I don't understand why many minorities always feel the need to feel bad when someone of their race does something bad or negative. When a white person does something negative or bad I never hear them saying I feel bad that this person is reflecting us. LOL. Forget about the persons race. We are all individuals on this earth is.
I remember one time at work, there was a news story where a hispanic guy raped and murdered someone and it was being discussed at my job. My hispanic friend said, Oh, now, look how this going to reflect on the hispanic community. I feel so bad because he is one of us. I was like What????

I don't think that any of this is true. Or at least not all. I mean, when you're on the set, won't you get fired for saying such things? And if people are so intimidated by him, I don't think they'd be flaunting his anger problems to tabloids and gossip magazines.
If a player can't play with the team, something has to be done. Grey's anatomy is all about team...even though the show focuses on Meredith and McDreamy, is an all-cast thing, and if he can't play nicely, and might damage the vibe and work of the group as a whole, then he needs to leave...
I havent been on the site much this week, just wanted to drop in and say HELLO.
I hope the cast can work it out, it is a great ensemble and the show is my favorite!! They need to behave like good boys and girls from now on!!
I think this recap has the facts wrong. Everywhere else that I've read it, T.R. Knight was the one who was late to the set, and Dempsey and Washington got into the scuffle because Dempsey insisted on waiting for Knight, and Washington went ape... hence the homophobic remark about Knight.
I love the show, and I like Washington's character, but if the boy can't be a team player.... especially now, when he's McHand-is-shaky, he'd be oh so easy to write out. Grey's without Dempsey would be like Grey's without Ellen Pompeo! Washington is icing, most of the rest of those guys are cake.
I thought that this was no big deal....but who wants to work with a jerk...I feel for the other cast members.
Definition of race: any one of the groups into which the world’s population can be divided on the basis of physical characteristics such as skin or hair color. That means the person that posted Washington was a racist doesn't know what they are talking about. If Washington did make disparaging comments about one of his co-stars sexual orientation, then the correct term for his behavior would be heterosexism, e.g. discrimination against homosexual men and lesbians by heterosexuals.
It sounds to me like Washington got into a fight with McDreamy because he's made a habit of showing up to the set late. He's got the diva-thing going and that would piss anyone off. All the other stuff is just rumors.
