The real Mariane Pearl (left) and as portrayed by Angelina Jolie (right).
Here’s the first look at Angelina Jolie in her new film A Mighty Heart, which is being co-produced by Brad Pitt and currently filming in India. The film is an adaptation of the book by widow Mariane Pearl, who’s husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002.

Quit Playin!
Sheesh..what's next? The Cindy Sheehan story? Hollywood's continual survival despite doing without real writers for the past 10 years never ceases to amaze me.
"It’s a beautiful day when someone can get a role because of talent and not typecasting or looks alone, when race doesn’t have to be a factor. I’m so tired of people from different countries or nationalities getting pissed because someone of another ethnicity takes on their role. Like J. Lo playing Selena (a puerto rican playing a mexican), or the controversy over Memoirs of a Geisha (casting Zhang Ziyi, a chinese girl, as a Japanese geisha). Or the straights who play gay and vice versa."

As far as looks go I think Annabella Sciorra should have played Mariane Pearl.
First let me preface my response by saying this, I am an African-American man, and I can understand both sides of the argument on the race of the actress debate. First, as a woman of Dutch and Afro-Cuban descent she has the right to want whomever she wants to portray her, black or white. From what I understand though, she did not want an African-American to play her, and that's her perogative. Not to mention the fact that Plan B, Brad Pitt's production company bought the rights to the project and Ms. Jolie happens to be his woman. Secondarily, I can also understand why Black women are upset. If you think hard about it there are very few black actresses in Hollywood that get major play. When I say this I am talking the female equivalent of a Denzel, Morgan, Will, Jamie, or Sam. The only one I can think of is Halle Berry, and she is mixed. I say Halle because no other black actress gets the plethora of roles or those that have the "potential" of being very financially successful at the box office. True Jada, Angela Bassett, and Thandie Newton are great but they don't get as many opportunities. So I understand a sistahs pain. That being what it is we live in country that promotes a certain kind of beauty....So let the debate rage on.
I think that Mariane Pearl is a beautiful and courageous woman. Those that write her off as being "ugly" seem so shallow and immature to hone in only on her looks which are normal as far as I'm concerned. She might not be Angelina Jolie (with her 2 hours of hair and makeup people helping her out), but she is definitely an attractive woman with great spirit and substance. Shame on you for putting her down.
I just want to say to all who are complaining about having a black woman - like Halle Berry play the part - remember that she is HALF WHITE! Her skin is dark, yes, but her mother is WHITE! People seem to forget that. She is always known for being african-american. She is just as much a white person as she is black.
It's a very boring movie since we already know the whole story. No one wants wasting two-hour just to see an untractive pregnant woman; also nobody knows how his enemies killed him because he was kidnapped.
One of the tactics for using Jolie (a beautiful woman) to portray an untractive woman, is to make the movie more believable; it's unethical for distorting the facts, misleading and lie to the audience. Mariane Pearl is absolutely no comparision to Angelina Jolie.
And having darker skin than the average Caucasian does not make Mrs. Pearl less Dutch. And having darker skin does not make any person if mixed "race" any less Irish, French, English, German, etc. insisting that an African American (not always the background of people with darker skin) play a character of mixed "race" insinuates that their Caucasian background is less important than their "African-American" background.
You know I think that its sad that some of you think that its wrong for Angelina Jolie to play Mariane Pearl. If the roles were reversed & Mariane was a white woman and a black woman played her, would it be any different? **FACT FOR THE DAY: For those of you who are not aware Angelina Jolie is half native and half french. So please have a reasonable arguement before you all go on a "race rampage". She has white skin. Mariane is light skinned as are some other African Americans, doesn't mean they are less black.
How the heck did Jennifer Aniston think she could play this role? She doesn't look ethnic at all! I like Jennifer Aniston but lets face facts! Angelina carries it off!
last i heard mrs. pearl was NOT african-american. she is african-cuban and dutch and was raised in france. not all people with darker skin are african-american and many take offense at being lumped into that category which has become a catch all for people with dark skin.
so it seems that the problem that many have is with skin color, not their actual heritage being adequately represented. don't assume that that is an issue for all. and please quit implying that the lighter skin heritage is less important than the darker skin heritage as many do, probably unintentionally, when arguing for an "african-american" woman to play a woman who has equal heritage of both lighter and darker skinned backgrounds. furthermore it is taking a personal choice of one woman and making it your own.
I think it is important that African American women get picked for African American roles. Thandi Newton is a really great actress there is not one movie that you can name where she has personally sucked, she draws the people in and they believe in her. Now you get a privaleged white women who is a far way from anything dignified and you get Angelina Jolie, this women was hopping in and out of hotel rooms before Brad came along and Mrs. Pearl is supposeed to be thrilled does she know who is really portraying her? Everyone says its not about race but it sure as heck it when you are a WHITE MAN (BRAD PIT) and you choose a WHITE WOMAN(angelina jolie) to play a BLACK WOMAN. WHAT THE HECK DOES A WHITE WOMAN KNOW ABOUT THE STRUGGLES OF A BLACK WOMAN??? answer that. The role should have gone to Thandi Newton, Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, can anyone else add the name of a qualified BLACK WOMAN.
Should Marianne and other people of interracial descent simply only relate to people with darker skin tones? Most people are not simply African, Irish, French, Latino, etc.
Should the role have gone to a person of her exact heritage or some one of similar color? Because those are two very different things.
The reason Plan B get the right is Brad read the book no other ones didn't at that time. Pearl touched by it Now she and Angelina are good friends She is happy she plays her. Please understand this!
Charlize Theron played an ugly and fat woman in Monster, should they have hired a white trash, lesbian, prostitute murderer? What of Nicole kidman in The Hours with that hair and the prosthetic nose? There aren't enough roles for unattractive actresses, why do they hire beautiful women who change their appearence to play those roles? See what a slippery slope this is??? And they won the Oscar for their acting. I don’t see what the problem is.

The poor people who come back and read replies they don't like, then post sad diatribes against people they don't agree with REALLY need a life!
WHAT are you doing?
I'm incensed that this role is not being played by a woman of color. There are so many beautiful actresses of color who could do a wonderful job. Mr. Pitt and Plan B should be ashamed. I thought the days of white actors in black face makeup were over in Hollywood.
