John Mayer opened up to fans about hooking up with groupies, joking with the paparazzi and what inspires him at the Z100 Lounge at New York City's Spotlight Live on Tuesday night.

And good thing new fling Jennifer Aniston – who's followed him to shows in London, Missouri and Toronto – wasn't in the audience!

"I might have hooked up with people, but as soon as we hooked up, they weren't fans anymore," Mayer, 30, told an audience member who asked him about fan love connections.

But, the singer admitted he hasn't gotten cozy with groupies "in a really long time – not since the camera phone!

"I'm not trusting enough to really open up to anybody I don't know very well anymore," he said.

Mayer also made a dig at young Hollywood.

"There really is a difference between being famous for playing a song and being famous for tripping," he said. "That's the only way to make it: by committing yourself [to your art]."

But Mayer – who joked that he has a truce with TMZ.com after playing jokes with the paparazzi – says he's happy to show off his silly side to fans.

"If fans want to see me walking out of a Porta Potty or walking down the street to the gym, I'm going to communicate that way," he said. "I'm going to show my lovely personality and giant brain!"

Mayer also talked about what inspires him.

"I'm inspired by anybody with a whole lot of control in what they do," Mayer said. "I'm inspired by anyone with really great control."
