Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey "have decided to take time off as a couple. Due to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time," reads a joint statement from the couple. The couple, who met on the set of the movie Sahara, dated for over a year, and were spotted sharing a romantic dinner in Alicante, Spain, as recently as May 4.
Cruz, 32, is presently in Spain filming Manolete, a drama about the legendary Spanish bullfighter, costarring Adrien Brody. Penelope recently won the award for best actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the Pedro Almodovar film Volver.
Meanwhile, 36-year-old McConaughey is stateside shooting We Are...Marshall, a biopic of former Marshall University football coach Jack Lengyel.
"Relationships are tough across the board," McConaughey told the Scottish Daily Record last February. "Look at the stats. Over half the people get divorced and they're not all actors in the business. They could be farmers or accountants."

NachosRocks, I was just thinking the SAME thing! Watch and see! Their PR people will throw them together. And Matthew is HTFG (Hotter Than Fish Grease)...better looking than Brad Pitt, in my opinion.
