According to the new issue of Elle, after listening to Mandy Moore’s new album Wild Hope, “you’ll never again watch her ex-boyfriend Zach Braff on Scrubs without seething.”
Indeed, Braff doesn’t have many fans among Moore’s friends either. “Toxic” is a word one of the actress’ pals uses to describe Braff. “He’s a really bad combination of narcissistic and immature,” the friend dishes to Elle.
However, the May cover girl is taking the high road. “Out of respect for Zach, who I still consider a friend and care about and support, I have nothing bad to say about him,” Moore, 23, demurs. “It just didn’t work out."
The rest of the interview in Elle’s special "green issue" (which hits newsstands nationwide on April 17) is decidedly less guarded, if not heart-wrenching, as Moore looks back on her career over the last nine years, and is embarrassed by what she sees.
See the interview highlights below and just try to stop yourself from tracking the girl down to give her a hug:
On her new album Wild Hope:
“I don’t want any expectations. I just want people to know I still sing. Most people don’t realize that, or else they hate my music – rightfully so.”
On never having tried drugs:
“I have a fear of being out of control and I’m not a rule breaker.”
On her early music career:
“I’m sure I was viewed as the young untalented one. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had some great pop music. And then there was Jessica Simpson. And then there was me. And that’s fine.”
On whether she’s a better singer or actress:
“I’m mediocre at both. I’m not trying to come across as self-deprecating. I’m just being honest...I’m sure other people look back on things they did when they were 15 and go, ‘Oh, god.’ That’s how I feel about it. It’s so embarrassing.”
On her new indie film Dedication:
“If people watch the movie and their opinion of me somehow shifts, then great. But I never put those sorts of expectations on anything, because inevitably I’ll just be disappointed. And that’s nothing new.”
On whether she has body issues:
“Sometimes I feel fine. Sometimes I don’t feel so great. I’m a regular person. I’m not that thin. I’m okay with representing a different type than the Hollywood beauty ideal. But other people aren’t so okay with that. I’ve been told that I have to lose weight for stuff before. It’s mortifying. It’s hard to have someone come up and go, ‘You should lose a few pounds.’ And they don’t say it delicately.”
On whether dating Zach Braff (who’s admitted to depression) made her more depressed:
“I don’t think so. It’s just a coincidence I think...The breakup didn’t help. But I was already in that place.”
