Jake Gyllenhaal, 26, and Reese Witherspoon, 31, kept fans guessing Wednesday night at the premiere of Rendition at NYC’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The on-again-off-again couple avoided eye contact on the red carpet and spent the rest of the night relegated to their own cliques.
“At the after party they were both doing their own thing,” an eyewitness tells Usmagazine.com. “They had friends with them and just hung out with them.”
Indeed, the only time the costars came into contact was for an awkward photo op.
“They didn’t even talk to each other at the post-reception except when a photographer pulled them together for a picture with the director—and he was standing in between them,” adds another onlooker.
“You know how actors are who are in projects together -- they always go up to each other and say, ‘It’s so good to see you!’ For actors to not talk to each other, they have to either hate each other -- which they don’t -- or they’re hiding something.”

I think they’re trying way too hard. I saw her recent interview about the movie. When she was asked, she said, “I’ve known Jake for years.” and kind of laughed. Like they are old buddies. Yeah. So based on the fact that they know each other, and they are working on the same film, even tho they have no scenes together, wouldn’t it seem likely that at the premiere, and the afterparty, they would at least exchange pleasantries and laugh and talk, maybe get a picture together? Everybody was taking pictures with each other. It was a night to celebrate after all. So these two act like they barely know each other? I don’t think so. My guess is that they just want to get thru all the publicity stuff for the movie and not have it be about them.
