After trying his hardest to destroy his career with repeated homophobic slurs, Isaiah Washington has decided to turn his charms on the gay and lesbian organization GLAAD.
Washington met with GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano and Kevin Jennings, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), yesterday in Los Angeles.
"Isaiah understands that he is going to be judged by more than just his apology," Giuliano said in a statement, released by GLAAD and GLSEN. "He knows that his future actions...will demonstrate his sincerity in becoming part of the solution to anti-gay bigotry. We welcome the opportunity to work with him in the coming months to help improve the cultural climate faced by LGBT people across this country."
The meeting was arranged by ABC and comes at the beginning of GLSEN's annual No Name-Calling Week, which means Washington can't use his favorite epithet for an entire seven days. No word on where he'll be on that final day at midnight, but we don't recommend being within ear shot.
Still, the organizations are optimistic that the meeting can do some good.
"GLSEN's research shows that name-calling is a significant barrier to learning, and this week is a particularly appropriate time for new allies to join the effort," Jennings added.
