Spinoffs can work! Does anyone remember The Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series. It had a much different feel than the movie it was baised on (And it proved that a spinoff can be a good thing!)

ABC
Now that the cast of Grey's Anatomy has officially exhausted almost every permutation of inter-sexing, it's only right that the show is spinning off and starting anew with a fresh, STD-free ensemble.
The pilot show will begin as an "enhanced" 2-hour episode that will also serve as the third season finale for Grey's Anatomy. The character Addison Montgomery-Shepherd will wrestle with the decision of leaving Seattle Grace, a scenario that will be triggered if ABC decides to pick up the spinoff for next season.
The new troupe, headlined by Grey's own Kate Walsh, so far includes: Taye Diggs (Day Break), Tim Daly (The Nine, Wings), Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries) Paul Adelstein (Prison Break), Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars), Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy).
Daly's character is, naturally, being billed as "handsome, sincere, like a McDreamy."
The as yet untitled new show would be set in L.A., paving the way for celebrity guest stars a la Entourage, and also feature a female psychiatrist, a female fertility specialist and a plastic surgeon.
While the finale/pilot airs in May, ABC won't have to decide whether to pick up the new series for its fall schedule until later in the summer.
Talk to Us: Will you watch the new spinoff?

In response to ga's reeks like a skunk!

I think it is a great idea to have a spinoff. The proposed cast is great, there are a lot of potential plot lines, and I'm just a little too irritated with Izzy and George at the moment so I'm happy to try a new viewing option. Not that I'll stop watching Grey's.
Oh, and comparing this to "Joey"? Please. Sometimes it does take time for a spinoff to find the right pace and feel but I think this one will start out strong and continue.
Too many hospital shows? Try too many stupid "Reality" shows that only serve to glamorize and reward backstabbing, stupid, and embarrassing (can you say Sanjaya) behavior.
I believe that the spin off will make it. frome what i saw they already started some really good drama and i just cant wait to see what happens next!!
At first I wasn't so sure a spinoff would be a good idea, but after seeing last weeks two hour show that included the cast of the "possible" spinoff, I think it could really work. First of all, they take Kates character and give here a chance to start a new chapter in her life which (for those of you that don't currently like her character) gives the writers the freedom to change who she is. I also liked that it was set in a clinic, and not a hospital; the dynamics of the characters seemed fresh and new considering the fact that it is another doctor show. I would watch it.
NO!
I hate her character! And she seems a very desperate actor as well!
Who does she think she is that she can spinoff from the biggest show around?
Please go away!
I do think it would be a great show Addison is a great character and there is nothing left for her on Grey's, and spin offs do work anyone ever heard of a little show called Frasier!
I'll only watch it for Merrin Dungey and Taye Diggs.
Since Addison is out can I have McSteamy?
I think that Meredith should have died when she tried to drown her stupid self in the lake. Then in the spin of show she could be the star and it could be something like the wonderful afterlife scene where she met Denny. So instead of the spin off being another ER of HOUSE it could be like Meredith in heaven. WOW I'm good I should write my own TV dramas =)
I love Gray's and its probablly the hottest show out right now and I don't understand why they are trying to change things. I am kind of pissed off about the whole spin off thing and I doubt that it would be even half as good as the original.
This will be a great series. I love Amy Brennerman, I think Hector Elizondo from his stint in Chicago Hope is an super cast memeber in another medical show, Tim daley is a great actor and on and on. This could be even better than Grays Anatomy.
We're already seeing the devastating effects that the "spinoff" show is having on Grey's Anatomy. Firstly, new episodes have been delayed WEEKS, being replaced by reruns or even worse, BS clipshows. The spinoff is a stupid idea mainly because it is detracting from the work they are putting into the already existing show. The other reason this idea is stupid is because there simply isn't any need to expand upon what is quite possibly the greatest show on television right now. The show isn't even through it's 3rd season and they're already trying to "fix" something that isn't broken. Shonda Rhimes is STUPID.
NO!!!! I won't watch it, seriously, has NO ONE EVER LEARNED from Spin-Off's and Sequals????
Speaking of which, whatever happened to "Joey"????
I would watch anything with Paul Adelstein. Fortunately for me, this show sounds like it will be around awhile -- and so will he!
I love Grey's and although Addison is not one of my favorite characters, i don't think she should leave. Why mess with a good thing? The cast has such good chemistry and i don't think the spin-off will last 10 episodes.. but i did hear Shonda was writing it, and she works miracles so you never know. Nevertheless, i will watch out of curiosity.. just because my obsession with Grey's has reached a ridiculous level...
if the writing is good, people will watch, it's that simple. and ellen p is a star, the chemistry between mer and der is what made grey's anatomy a huge hit in the first place. there is no denying that. there was no chemistry between ad and der no way, never but mer and der, they could make anyone melt.
I LOVE Tim Daly. Love. Would watch the show just for him. Luckily, Kate Walsh is awesome (I was planning on watching even before the TD news) and she and TD have great chemistry together. Bring on Taye and Amy and Merrin too!
Not only do spinoffs work when the writing is great, but there can be multiple spinoffs on at the same time, i.e CSI: etc. and Law & Order etc. Lately it appears that spinoffs are more successful then new dramas. They are given more slack to improve ratings then new series. Who knows? It has worked for crime shows and forensic shows, why not medical shows? I would be curious to see how the characters evolve. I just hope that they would bring McSteamy along! I just don't see Tim Daly as a sexy lead, but then again who knew that the geek from Can't Buy Me Love would turn into McDreamy?
Yeah, I would probably watch at least the first few episodes to see how it goes. But I seriously doubt that it will do very well without all of the other characters that are in Gray's Anatomy.
I would love to see how they would do it. I love her character and some new scenery would be welcomed by me. I love all the CSI's and all the Law & Order (especially SVU) So I say make it happen, I'll be there waiting to see how it spins.
I think that having a spinoff of Grey's isn't really too great of an idea. I really like Addison on Grey's, she is one of my favorite characters on the show. If they had Addison "leave Seattle Grace" a.k.a leaving Grey's, watching the show w/o one of the main characters won't be the same-kind of like it they would have taken Meredith off the show (which actually I may not have minded personally). And the whole spinoff thing? I think more than likely it will bomb...just not a good idea.
Does this mean no more Piz of Veronica? :(
I'd watch, but I fear the writing would not be as well for both shows as it is on Grey's now (minus sweeps eps). A lot of times writers bite more than they can chew. I would miss the Addison chemistry with just about everyone- I love the history between she and Derek, I love the Karev/Sloan stuff.
How much of this can you digest? I have seen this show from time to time and getting through without serious stomach distress is not possible. So now a spinoff... I will be purchasing stock in Alka Seltzer.
While I love GA, I think it's too soon for a spinoff to work -- plus I like the dynamic of Dr. Montgomery on the show. I'd probably watch the spinoff out of curiosity, but as another poster put it, there are already too many hospital shows on TV right now. Either the spinoff will fail, or it will do too well and it will absorb Grey's. I can't see them both working at the same time, though.
I would watch it.
To answer the challenge of naming a few spin offs that work here you go: The Jeffersons, Melrose Place, Fraiser, Facts of Life, Laverne and Shirley, Mork & Mindy (a personal fav). Just wanted to prove that sometimes the spinoff idea is a good one.
