Revenge Showrunner on Series Finale: “This Year We Nailed It!”

If there’s one thing Revenge knows how to do, it’s end things with a bang. The ABC drama, which was loosely based off the classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo, is known for its cliffhangers, twists, disastrous cocktail parties, deliciously campy dialogue, and shocking deaths. So with the series finale airing Sunday, May 10, Us Weekly spoke to showrunner Sunil Nayar about the conclusion to his four-season thrill ride.

“Last year’s season finale was just so satisfying,” he told Us of the episode in which Emily Thorne sent Victoria Grayson to a mental hospital and Conrad Grayson was murdered by the still-alive David Clarke. “And I told people I think the thing with these shows is you can have a great, great season, but if you don’t stick the landing, it feels a little bit disappointing. It’s like a great date, but if the last moment of the date isn’t great, then you think I’m probably not going to see that person again. I feel like last year we nailed it and this year we nailed it.”

As for the fate of everyone’s favorite double-named protagonist, Nayar wouldn’t reveal whether Amanda Clarke (Emily VanCamp) will come out of this ordeal alive or not. But one thing’s for sure — no one will survive unscathed.

“Should she survive, what is that survival going to look like because I think there’s no way to get out of this untainted,” he said. “The nature in which the series finale is going to be is the idea that each character, in some form or another, gets their moment of redemption and destruction.”

One character who has risen from the grave several times is Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe). After she blew up her Hamptons home several episodes ago — and left behind a suicide note — many thought Vicki to be dead. But true to form, she came back with a vengeance. At the time, actress Stowe gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter saying her character would not be coming back and that she felt Victoria’s story line ended in season 3.

“There is no show without Madeleine,” Nayar explained. “And she understands that. I don’t think it was anything about a work frustration or not wanting to do the show any more, but she believes so firmly in her character’s journey that she reflected [that] in those interviews.”

This could well be the end for both Victoria and Amanda, as we see the Hamptons socialite staring down the barrel of the Revenger’s gun in a new sneak peek for the finale.
