Teen Mom OG’s Catelynn Lowell: Why I Needed ‘Extra Help’ for My Mental Health Issues

Finally facing it. Teen Mom OG’s Catelynn Lowell revealed in a new interview with MTV News why she decided to seek “extra help” for her mental health issues, as seen on the dramatic Monday, September 5, episode of the hit docuseries.

“I decided I needed to get help from talking with [my husband], Tyler [Baltierra], and realizing that I maybe needed something more intense for myself,” the Michigan native, 24 — whose struggles with anxiety and depression have long been documented on Teen Mom OG — told MTV News, as seen in the clip above. “For some reason, I just had a lightbulb moment where I was like, ‘Maybe I need extra help.'”

As viewers witnessed on Monday night’s episode, the 16 & Pregnant alum hit a breaking point after she purchased a $3,000 mini-pig much to Baltierra’s dismay. As she explained to an MTV producer named Jessica, the new responsibility of caring for the small farm animal set her over the edge.

“I just feel like I need help. ‘Cause I wasn’t really feeling good this morning, and I was having a little bit of anxiety last night,” Lowell stated on the show before explaining that her hubby, 24, was worried about her. “I just broke down and I was like, ‘You know what, I’m not OK … I do need mental help, something’s just not right.'”

The Conquering Chaos author also said that she intended to “quit smoking pot.” As fans saw earlier in the episode, Baltierra called his spouse to ask where the “roaches” were, and at one point Lowell covered the in-car camera with a hoodie as her mom, April Brockmiller, lit up what appeared to be a cigarette.

As Us Weekly previously confirmed in March, the mom of Novalee, 20 months — she is also mom to Carly, 7, whom she placed for adoption in 2009 — entered an Arizona-based treatment program. “I’m seeking help for myself and my family,” Lowell told MTV News in a statement at the time. “Thank you to all of my supporters. My family and I would appreciate some privacy at this time.”

On April 5, she told fans that getting treatment had made a huge difference. Just wanted to know I’m doing great! Best decision I have ever made for myself,” she tweeted. “I’ll b home soon #thankyouforyoursupport.”
