Many "non-white" people have been nominated for, or have won, an Academy Award (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Black_Academy_Award_winners_and_nominees and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_Academy_Award_winners_and_nominees). But no "non-black" people have ever been nominated for an NAACP award.

Is Eddie Murphy a sore loser? After failing to nab the award for Best Supporting Actor to Little Miss Sunshine’s Alan Arkin, Murphy tried to brush off the loss, telling Us, "It's fine. It happens. It's OK."
But clearly it wasn't. Shortly thereafter Murphy, 45, and girlfriend Tracey Edmonds left the show in a huff and didn’t return. Thanks to the early exit, the actor didn’t see any of his Dreamgirls castmates perform and missed out on costar Jennifer Hudson’s win for Best Supporting Actress.
Talk to Us: Do you think it was wrong of Eddie to leave?

this whole racist thing is so rediculous.i have to agree with previous guy's comment.yes, slavery is and was a terrible thing, but newsflash for the blacks/african-americans/chocolate brown people out there, SLAVERY HAS EXISTED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME AND IT WASN'T ONLY WITH BLACKS.
i agree with "brown" colored anonymous' comment, and i LOVE that he said "brown" skin. because truly, black people are not BLACK. but what am i? sallow-off-white-freckled skin? getting so complicated anymore. but i did become angry once when i was trying to get some info on a gorgeous "black girl'" who was with my "black" friend, when he pushed me to describe her as "milk chocolate brown". i think we are getting out of control with this crap. dont you? and what happened to that whole african-american thing?? which then would make me welsh-scottish-indian-american.i'm tired already.
what a spoiled baby and very poor sport. get over yourself eddie, you dont need a statue to prove you're a good actor. be a humble gentleman and be happy for your peers.
I feel if he wanted to leave than that was on him. He may regret later not seeing the rest of the cast members but thas something he will have to deal with. Eddie Murphy is a good actor and as long as he puts out great movies, who cares where he is or when he leaves or anything else!
You're all hung up on skin colour. I'm a brown person. All I see around me is mis-directed insecurity as we all try and match up to imaginary, media forged aesthetic standards.
Bittersweet. I don't think Eddie really cared before, being in business all this time and making so much money in the movies, but he probably did finally want to win it and was hurt and embarassed. I frankly think his movie "Norbit" hurt him because it was blasted as politically incorrect and making fun of fat, black women stereotypes and that bit in and threw the race to the second best choice. But I heard he was warned not to release his movie but to delay after the Oscars but he insisted on putting it out on schedule. I'm sure somewhere, deep down, he must know that movie's unpopular press cost him that Oscar. Of course, he's handsome and incredible in that role! Amazing. But that's Hollywood for you!
OH MY GOD! Please, can you stop playing victims and blaming Eddie's skin color for his loss? HE LOST TO AN AMAZING ACTOR, accept the fact. Man, how stupid is to blame everything on racism...WAKE UP PEOPLE, that is over. Eddie didn't have the best performance this year, PERIOD! And, Jennifer Hudson didn't have it either, she is SO over rated and SHE WON...and for those who haven't noticed...SHE IS BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MURPHY DEFINITLY HAS ALOT OF ENEMYS IN HOLLYWOOD. IM SURPRISED THEY NOMINATED HIM. THAT SAID /THE GUY IS GREAT HE IS A NATURAL CUT THE GUY A BREAK
Eddie had every right to storm out because he shouldn't of had that white cracker take the award just because of his skin color. Eddies performance was incredible, it's just so sad that the white man always prevails. You really think they are going to let three African Americans win at one time. That would be crazy, well at least to the oscar's reputation.

A judgment call on your comments about IQ, grammar, then state that Eddie Murphy "is phony pig".
Check yourself, Please!!
I am trying to remember where I read somewhere that he wanted to leave early to be with his kids. Whatever personal reason to beat the traffic or be with the kids? He is entitled to. We all shouldn't quickly judge him for whatever real reason IMHO. Thank goodness, we live in America, to make choices.
his fellow castmates were nominated (and won), he should have stayed for them and for dreamgirls.
though i love eddie murphy, i think he shouldnt have walked out of that awards show and i did think that either mark wahlberg or alan arkin deserved to win.
it was like he got to high on himself and then when he lost, he was more crushed than ever. its ok for someone else to think you're a shoe in, but for you to think it is already bad news.
alan arkin did a great job in little miss sunshine and after all of these great things that hes done, he deserved to win it. and though people might think that his role wasnt as "challenging," you dont really even know until youre faced with the situation yourself. im just saying....
so all in all, it was wrong for him to leave and i think it just sort of showed a bad side of him or something. but i still think he's a good actor.
I saw "Dreamgirls" and while I liked, not loved, but liked the movie and bought the soundtrack, I was surprised when the Oscar nominations came out and Eddie Murphy was one of the nominees. He did do a good, solid job, but it was not Oscar winner material, in my humble opinion. He was Eddie Murphy in the movie, not James Early. I felt like it was too much Eddie. I liked Jennifer Hudson's performance and felt she WAS Effie White, while Eddie was Eddie playing James Early. But again, that is just my personal opinion.
As far as him leaving is concerned, yes it shows that he is not a good sport, but then he doesn't have to be. I don't understand people judging him. Nothing makes us feel so righteous as the faults of others. If Eddie Murphy wanted to leave, which he did, then he should have left, which he did. Case closed.
First off, I'd like to say that Eddie should have won the Oscar. But he didn't. He left suddenly after the announcement was made, for reasons only HE knows about. We can all assume that he was pissed, and just decided to leave. If that's the case, then it's poor sportsmanship on his part. Was it a sentimental thing for mister Arkin? If so, then why Peter O'Toole didn't win for Best Actor? The Academy choses the MOST TALENTED actor for it's award. Sad to say, they made their choice.. Sure, he should have stayed to support Beyonce, Jennifer, Anika during their show stopping performance. It did not look good on his behalf to just bolt like this, but again, NONE of us knows why he left. And who cares right about now? He may have lost some points for this, and I feel the Norbit should NOT have been released before the Oscar telecast. He already had his "Delirious" comedy DVD out during this time. And all the "Dreamgirls" hoopla. What's to come of him now? Stay tuned!!! It's always something in Hollywood? Oh, and by the way, isn't award shows becoming quite a bore these days?
well annonymous, I agree with you totally, my question to you is this though. When is enough, will it take 1000 years? Nothing will ever make better what happened, but if we never ever ever ever ever can get past it, then it will always be an issue...and by the way, in this day and age, I'd rather be black then gay, cause gay people are more discriminated against today then anyone else, and guess who is gay, so don't try to think for a second that i have ever only been verbaly attacked....in fact the most predjudice i face is from the black community, rap songs making fun of gay people, " the low down" mentality.....and hey , thanks tim hardaway for saying you hate gays, imagine if i said i hated black people, i owuld be arrested, so why wasn't he charged, cause he wold have called it racist
I sympathize with Eddie on a carrer level. Let's face it, he's payed his dues and starred in countless of number of pictures. I was hoping that he would finally be recognized for his acting talents and win. Plus, since starring in Coming to Amercia, the roles he has been taking are terrible and this role in Dreamgirls would be a nice way of making a comeback.
eddie murphy losing to alan arkin had nothing to do with race. alan arkin won because he gave a great performance and because he is an old school actor. let's face it he's 73 and his last nomination was forty years ago. i knew they were going to give at least one award to an old timer and peter o'toole wasn't the one. i believe eddie murphy did a great job also and maybe he has a right be upset because sentiment losted him they award. please haters enough with the sore loser crap because he isn't the only one to act like that. when nicole kidman won her oscar i distinctly remember rene zellweger ducking out early and going home. the same with bill murray when he lost. it is a competition after all, people want to win.
Eddie Murphy's brilliant buzz should've led to an Oscar triumph, but Eddie was hit with a big surprise Feb. 25 when Alan Arkin upset. Some predicted it (i.e. Bill O'Reilly, though he was in favor of Jennifer Hudson winning), many didn't. Here's one of three theories:
1.) Many either got sick of the DREAMGIRLS buzz altogether that they decided two of its actors would NOT occupy the acting categories.
2.) There was heavy voter sentimentalism towards Alan Arkin (after being nominated twice before and never winning), and since SUNSHINE was notably an ensemble film, it would only seem right to award ONE of the actors, and it wasn't going to be 10-year-old Abigail Breslin that's for sure.
3.) Voters still perceive Murphy as JUST a comedic actor and his body of work is somewhat of a turn-off (i.e. METRO, SHOWTIME, VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN, NORBIT(!) having just been released two weeks before the Oscars).
Murphy deserved it! His performance was much showier and more of a challenge than Arkin's. But so many factors come into play that it's guaranteed there'll be in an upset (PAN'S LABYRINTH for one losing to the safer, lighter THE LIVES OF OTHERS. Remember SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE over SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? Please!).
It's sad Murphy loss and I don't blame him being upset. But to walk out? Just a bit much. Instead of being angry that he lost, maybe he should view his nomination as a vote of confidence that he should try his hand in more intense dramatic performances. I would've at least stayed to see if Jennifer Hudson won.
canadian watcher,
It's that attitude that gets us no where. You say you are tired of paying for something you didn't do personally... well then why don't all blacks and indians just forget about what happened in their past... just treat it like history... even when it still exists today. You're talking about verbally being attacked for your beliefs? What about the thousands of blacks that were lynched, burned to death, etc... just for being born black. Now I agree that what happened to you should not of happened... but if you're upset about that how do you think black people feel?
You Americans are so stupid. And im not talking about eddie murphy, im talking about you ignorant people. Go learn something productive.
hey there DEE, well if you read all the posts, you will see that the issue of race was brought up when a a person who is a minority said that was why eddie didn't win, so it was part of the discussion...and what an ignorant thing to say, that only minorities can face racism, are you telling me that being called a honky, being verbally and physically confronted, just because of my skin color, which happens to be white, isn't considered racism, I really hope you don't think that isn't racism, if you do it just sows you are talking out of ignorance, not logical thinking
i seen both movies.....dreamgirls sucked and eddie murphy was ok , but alan arkin blew him away as the supporting actor.....in fact steve carrol could have been nominated as well and won, over eddie as well......before you say that eddie was a shoe in, maybe you should watch alan arkin in that role and then tell me who is a better actor......if i had to play a cool role, arkin had it......that guy was amazing.....thats my opinion.....eddie murphy probably will hate the academy now and is really jealous over this, cause he may never be nominated again.....do you think that all the members nominated for this movie should have the oscar ?.....please, give me a break....he was a suckass to leave , just like 50 cent when he lost to evavescence for the grammy a few years ago......he'll go down like that lookinhg like a suckass.......did you see peter o'toole who lost 8 times get up and leave ....or wahlberg, who played in a real movie......geeze, i feel sorry for eddie murphy, but just because he didn't get the oscar, didn't mean arkin didn't deserve it......so poor eddie .....maybe one day you will get the nod.....but when you got oprah opening her big mouth so much, and everyone telling you that you are a shoe in........time to be humble son, cause you may not have been 2nd either......the movie has to be good to win as well.....if anything got snubbed from dreamgirls, its that all 3 songs lost too melissa ethridges crap song....which sounds like every song that she has sung before....boring
Now to answer the page's question: Eddie hasn't made a good movie since Boomerang. Since he knows that he won't be getting an Oscar nod for NORBIT, he was upset but, honestly, he should have at least given his respects to his fellow castmates if he was a true gentleman...What am i talking about...isn't Mel B walking around with his eighth kid?? Gentleman he is not...
What the hell are you talking about racism for in a Gossip site? the question was "Do you think it was wrong for Eddie to leave" not "Was it racist for Eddie to leave"... please go to some Peace Coalition site...rambling crazy when it's a question about a man leaving during Oscar night... be a man suck it up and get over it...you'll never know about racism until you're the minority...what a baby... get a tissue and go to your room.
to annonymous guy, well there a bunch of them, but to the perosn who thought I only said it cause i got hurt by black people, sorry there part time dr.phil, you are wrong. and as for saying only white people are racist, wow, that just made everything else you say foolish, cause no logical person can believe that. yes, black people faced terrible oppresion and abuse, awful, one of if not the worst stain on humanity, but it is ricj when people like, oh, Barry Bonds say they face racism, and then days later say he wants to beat babe ruths record so he can take down the great white hope...wow, now that is racist. The problem is, you can never call a black person racist cause they call you a racist back. Here is great example, there are schools where white people can't go, clubs that white people can't join, scholarships, business grants, etc., that i can't get, and only caus emy skin is white. We can't get rid of racism, if it is promoted by society. How can I tell my kids, " don't ever judge someone on the basis of their skin color" and then have them ask me why it is alright that they can't get a certain scholarship only because they are white, it is counter intuitive. My fear is that, and i hear it alot, that many people in my age range ( 29) are sick of being called racist when they are not, sick of paying for mistakes i never made and policies i denounce, and sick of being made to feel guilt for no reason. It is these people who want to stop racism, but are starting to get sick and tired of trying to stop it while, society promotes it, they will revolt soon, and anger will boli over. One of my best friends is black, my family has middle eastern members, I have worked on anti-racism campaigns, but once at an event I disagreed publicly with racial quoatas, and was shouted down, called racist and a honky, and not a single black person had a problem with me being attacked.....how is that right
Eddie Murphy, get over yourself brother man! You are not even that good an actor!
My. Murphy, would you and Mr. Cruise please come out of the closet!
Eddie Murphy should have won. even though he didnt win, he should have stormed out like that. but he doesnt have to win award shows he is a legend. if it wasnt for him there wouldnt be comidians such as chris rock, jamie foxx, chris tucker, or martin lawrence (just 2 name a few). he is one of the funniest comidians ever. 2 all those haters that dont like seeing blacks on the rise in hollywood, bleep U.
BADNEWZ,VA STAND UP. BLACKS R TAKING OVER 4EVER.
