Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo surprised everyone when they announced on July 16 that they had recently reunited and were engaged to be married. But no one was more stunned by the news than the Maroon 5 singer's most recent ex-girlfriend, supermodel Nina Agdal — who found out about the engagement via a text message from her former beau, a source confirms to Us Weekly. (The New York Post's Page Six was first to report the news.)
"Adam just went MIA on Nina and stopped answering her calls," the source tells Us. "He finally told her about Behati in a text message."
The New York Post reports that Agdal is "heartbroken," but another source tells Us she's "holding up" and "doing fine." Levine, meanwhile, is happily moving forward with Prinsloo, whom he dated from May 2012 until this past spring.
"After Adam broke up with Behati, he couldn't stop thinking about her," an insider recently said of the Voice coach, 34. "He realized he really loved her and wanted to be with her."
Added another pal: "Adam kept talking to Behati and was flooded with emotion when they saw each other again. He knew he wanted to propose."
Prinsloo is similarly smitten. Speaking about the surprise engagement with Us Weekly just two days after Levine popped the question, she gushed that she and her new fiance were "just so excited in this moment."
"I forgot I slept with [the ring] on last night, and I woke up and went, 'Oh, hello!'" she quipped. (As previously reported, Levine proposed with a vintage ring, featuring an oval diamond in a raised setting on a thin, dark silver band.)
As for the wedding? "I'm so laid back. Obviously my mind has been going, but we haven't talked about anything," the Victoria's Secret model, 24, told Us. "I want all of our friends and family there, so however big that is going to be…It hasn't even sunk in yet!"
