About

After short stints on several TV shows, including Growing Pains and Beverly Hills, 90210, Matthew Perry was cast as Chandler Bing on NBC’s Friends. Perry starred on the hit sitcom for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

His work on Friends, as well as roles on The West Wing and The Ron Clark Story, earned Perry five Emmy nominations throughout his career. Perry’s film credits include Fools Rush In (1997), The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and 17 Again (2009). The actor also starred on Aaron Sorkin’s drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which aired one season from 2006 to 2007. Perry wrote and starred in the dark comedy play The End of Longing, which premiered in 2016 in London.

Over the years, Perry was romantically linked to Tricia Fisher, Julia Roberts, Gabrielle Allan, Jamie Tarses, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren Graham. In 2020, he proposed to Molly Hurwitz after four years of dating, but they later split.

Perry was open about struggling with his mental health and addiction to drugs and alcohol. He detailed his road to recovery in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home in October 2023 at age 54. Officials determined that his death was an accident, with his official cause of death “the acute effects of ketamine.” Drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use, were also listed as contributing factors to his death.
