Anne Hathaway’s godmother calls her when she curses in print, but that doesn’t stop her from letting some choice words fly in a new interview with Marie Claire.
In the mag’s August issue, the 24-year-old actress also explains why she went topless in the films Havoc and Brokeback Mountain, but famously passed on the lead role in Knocked Up (which later went to Katherine Heigl), and why she’s not as squeaky-clean as you think.
Interview excerpts below…
On bursting into tears during Brokeback Mountain:
“Didn’t stop for an hour. And Kirsten Dunst, who was going out with Jake, was like two rows behind me, and [Jake’s sister] Maggie Gyllenhaal was right behind me, and we were all crying so hard; my boyfriend offered Maggie his hankerchief, and she was sharing it with Kirsten. And I’m thinking, That’s my boyfriend’s – can I have my Kleenex that you b-tches are using?”
On not being a prude:
“I love [the band] Peaches. When people are all like, ‘Do you think you have a squeaky-clean image?’ I’m like, ‘Could a squeaky-clean girl know all the lyrics to ‘Teaches of Peaches’? I mean, my favorite song is called ‘F—k the Pain Away.’”
On watching Brokeback Mountain for the first time at the Venice Film Festival:
“I’m not in the movie until, like, 45 minutes into, and I start to get sick to my stomach that I’m gonna be the one to f--k it up. So before I came on-screen, I run outside, because I can’t handle it.”
On her image:
“I’m not a walking one-woman drama show. I’m pretty bad entertainment – I’m not particularly well dressed, and I haven’t graduated from college. I think you should like Natalie Portman a lot more.”
On her nudity policy:
“I don’t actively search for [movies] that I can get naked in. It’s not the most fun requirement of the job, but nor is it something that I would ever NOT do a job because of. It is what it is. Some people choose not to do it on moral grounds; I think that’s a shoddy argument. I turned down another movie because it was going to show a vagina – not mine, but somebody else’s. And I didn’t believe that it was actually necessary to the story.”

I like her ok, which is to say she doesn't annoy me and make me want to immediatly bathe after reading an article about her a la Spears. I can get with her nudity standards, either it's right or it's not. No big. I'm not so sure about the liking Peaches meaning you're not squeaky clean, kind of a random standard. Listening to them doesn't mean I can't be sqeaky clean.

Anne has big eyes like ET, but I'd do her. She's just a regular person that does not want people to think of her with a phony image based on movies to mask the fact that gets laid, performs oral on her b/f, and rips a few farts.

I had more respect for her when she accepted roles like the one in The Princess Diaries. This is too much. What is wrong in the screwed up world of Hollywood with being squeaky clean? We need more squeaky clean and less trashy ditch-pig. Brit and Lindsay have that more than adequately covered. Sounds like the girl has some issues.

Why is it a shoddy argument? I mean, if it goes against ones personal moral (not necessarily religious or political ) so they turn down a role because of it, I’m fine with that. Some people guide their lives by their values and I applaud that. And even if it was just because they weren’t comfortable with it I think it’s fine. If one actress if fine with nudity in a role good for her, if she’s not I don’t think that should be held against her. I think that not wanting to be nude in a film is a good enough reason. Honestly, I think Anne is talented, but here she comes off like Britney in her early twenties-too desperate too shed her wholesome-sweet-innocent girl next door image in hopes that it will advance her career.
