Don't start hatin' on Angelina around Mariane Pearl.

The widow of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl — whom Jolie,, 31, portrayed in May's A Mighty Heart — has spoken out against critics who bash the actress' prolific political involvement, Radar reports.

"Celebrities are doing the work that journalists are not," she said at a Glamour bash to toast her book In Search of Hope in NYC Thursday. "We can't afford to be cynical about that.

"Can you really strike out against Angie and Bono?" she added. "Sure, there's an opinion backlash. People think they are doing it for some sort of ego trip. But the people who are expressing that opinion? What are they doing?"

Fashion designer Marc Bouwer — who counts Jolie as one of his celeb clients — also rose to Jolie's defense Thursday at a different NYC fuction: the La Dolce Vita New York charity event and auction.

"I think her humanitarian position has just changed the way actresses and people in the industry think about what they can actually do ... to help the world," he said.

Jolie, he said, is also passionate about her clothes (usually, she's dressed in all-black): "She is very selective as to what she wears," he said.

Has he ever dressed the entire Jolie-Pitt clan?

"No, I’ve never dressed the whole family," he told Usmagazine.com.
