Oh, Gina, we have been in your corner since you proclaimed your love for Simon in the early audition rounds. We even liked your performance this week. It made us “Smile,” it really did! So sorry to see you go.

The night kicked off quietly enough with a surprise performance by big band crooner Michael Bublé, who filled in for the week’s mentor, Tony Bennett, who came down with the flu. Along with Buble’s messy performance of his new single “Call Me Irresponsible,” viewers also witnessed the singer’s attempt at comedy, when he asked Seacrest “Am I still wasting my votes by voting for Antonella Barba?” Sorry, buddy, totally lost on America. Keep your day job.

As Seacrest got down to business and revealed the voting results, our kids were grouped in threes to learn their fate. When will Team Idol learn that we’re just not fooled when producers separate the groups as they did last night? Did anyone really think there was the slightest possibility that Melinda, LaKisha or Jordin were going home? What about the Blake, Chris and Sanjaya grouping? As soon as we saw Chris and Blake’s excited secret handshake, we knew those boys were safe. Sanjaya seemed relieved as well, but his time is clearly ticking, so keep voting, Howard Stern et al.

But as we close another emotional Idol week, next week is shaping up to be one that will go down in the record books, when our elite eight are mentored by the one and only Jennifer Lopez for a Latin-themed performance episode.
